For many parents, a child’s first dental visit comes with a lot of questions. What will happen during the appointment? Will my child be nervous? Am I scheduling at the right age?

At OP Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, we’ve helped families navigate those first visits since 1981. Whether you’re visiting our Boone or North Wilkesboro office, our goal is simple: create a positive experience that helps your child feel comfortable and sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

When Should My Child First Visit the Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing.

While that may seem early, these visits allow us to monitor development, answer questions, and help parents establish healthy habits from the beginning.

We also offer complimentary one-year-old visits, giving parents the opportunity to meet our team, learn about infant oral health, and ensure everything is developing properly.

How Should I Prepare My Child?

One of the best things you can do is keep the conversation positive and simple.

Children often form expectations based on what they hear before they experience something themselves. Instead of focusing on procedures, try explaining that the dentist will:

  • Look at their teeth

  • Count their teeth

  • Help them keep their smile healthy

  • Show them how to clean their teeth

Avoid sharing negative dental experiences from your own past, even jokingly. Children are incredibly perceptive and can pick up on anxiety more quickly than we realize.

If you’re feeling nervous yourself, remember that a calm and confident attitude helps your child feel more relaxed.

What Happens During the Appointment?

Every child is different, and every first visit is tailored to their age, comfort level, and dental needs.

For younger children, the appointment may simply include:

  • A gentle examination

  • A discussion with parents

  • Oral health education

  • Recommendations for home care

Many young children do not require X-rays during their first visit, especially if their teeth are healthy and developing normally.

Our team takes time to move at your child’s pace and make the experience as comfortable as possible.

What If My Child Is Nervous?

That’s completely normal.

Our offices are designed specifically for children, with welcoming spaces, friendly faces, and a team experienced in helping nervous patients feel at ease.

Families are always welcome to stop by, meet our team, and become comfortable with the environment before their scheduled appointment.
